The username and password a newsreader sends with the AUTHINFO command to open an authenticated session. Providers issue them at signup and they are usually distinct from the website login. Because they are transmitted on every connection, using an SSL port keeps them off the wire in plaintext. Sharing them widely triggers connection limits and account suspension.
