Flame War

Also known as: flamewar

A thread that collapses into sustained mutual insult, often running for hundreds of articles and crossposted into unrelated groups as participants recruit allies. Flame wars were a recurring drain on high-traffic groups; regulars responded by killfiling the participants or by asking that follow-ups be redirected elsewhere with a Followup-To header. Godwin's Law was coined as an observation about how such threads tended to end.
