Green Card Spam

Also known as: Canter and Siegel, green card lottery spam

The advertisement for immigration lottery services posted by lawyers Laurence Canter and Martha Siegel in April 1994, crossposted to thousands of newsgroups by script. Earlier commercial posts existed, but this was the first at that scale and the first its authors defended publicly. The reaction, angry mail and the earliest cancelbots, marks the start of Usenet's spam era and of organized anti-spam work.
