Also known as: sig dashes, signature delimiter
The three characters dash dash space, alone on a line, marking the start of a signature block. Newsreaders use it to strip signatures automatically when quoting an article and often to display them in a different colour. Established by convention long before it was written into the article format standards, and still honoured by most mail and news software today.
