Snipping

Also known as: trimming, snip

Cutting the quoted portion of an article down to the lines actually being answered, usually marking the cut with a bracketed note reading snip. It kept article sizes down when Usenet moved over slow dial-up links and made threads readable. Failure to snip, especially combined with top-posting and a long signature, was one of the most reliably criticised habits on text groups.
