A new arrival to a newsgroup, or to Usenet generally, marked by unfamiliarity with local conventions rather than by technical inexperience. Posting a question already answered in a group's FAQ, top-posting, or quoting an entire article to add one line all identified one. Treatment ranged from patient pointers to the FAQ through outright flaming, and hardened sharply after Eternal September.
