Unix to Unix Copy, the store and forward file transfer system over dial-up modem links that carried Usenet before the network moved to NNTP over TCP/IP. Sites polled each other on a schedule, so an article might take days to cross the continent, and hop-by-hop routing produced bang path addresses. Extinct as a news transport, though its vocabulary survives in the Path header.
